Fluoride

Fluoride can help protect your smile and your dental investment. Numerous clinical studies have evaluated fluoride’s cavity protection abilities, and while most of the early studies on cavities involved children, the clinical results in studies of adults also show positive results.

A recent survey by the National Institute of Dental Research found that adults have an average of 23 decayed and filled tooth surfaces, and 30 percent of adults have more than 30 decayed or restored surfaces. Secondary- also called recurrent- decay around fillings is considered a major dental problem. Surveys show that 40-50 percent of replaced fillings were caused by recurrent cavities.

As we age, many of us suffer from gum recession. This exposes root surfaces and creates additional areas that are susceptible to tooth decay. In the U.S., adults are living longer and keeping a greater number of their teeth. This combination has resulted in an increase in the incidence of root cavities in adults.

On another related issue, tooth sensitivity to hot or cold food and drinks affects one in seven adults- about 40 million Americans- at some point.

Fluoride treatments can address all of these issues. The latest research has shown that properly applied fluoride inhibits cavities by forming a more acid-resistant surface layer, and reverses or remineralizes early forming cavities. Fluoride can enhance the rate of natural remineralization by saliva. Fluoride relieves tooth sensitivity by initiating a rapid mineralization of the exposed root surfaces.
